It is of critical importance to take into consideration the needs of all categories of citizens, including people with disabilities in the process of drawing up a strategy for local communities. This was stated by Governmental Commissioner for the Rights of People with Disabilities Raisa Panasyuk in the course of the ceremony dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Association of Ukrainian Cities (AUC).

She stressed that cooperation with the AUC is growing stronger. «This is very important, as local self-government reform is being put into practice now, thus it is essential to take into account the needs of all categories of citizens, including people with disabilities in the process of drawing up a strategy for local communities. It is of paramount importance to understand that people with disabilities can be a good resource for the development of the community. Thereby, they can be both ideological and talented people», noted Raisa Panasyuk.

According to her, a point to keep in mind is that when implementing reforms, it is crucial to take into account the needs of individual, thus it demonstrates a respect for human rights. «This is the most vital thing that should be in our country - respect for the rights of each individual», emphasized the Governmental Commissioner.

Raisa Panasyuk recalled that the Memorandum with the Association of Ukrainian Cities had been signed and it had already produced results. In particular, with the support of the Renaissance Foundation, the implementation of the project "Country of Equal Opportunities" was launched. «Representatives of the public in synergy with officials of the local self-government authorities will explore issues of accessibility of their local communities and burning needs in order to make the life of residents more comfortable, affordable and in line with European standards», underscored the Governmental Commissioner for the Rights of People with Disabilities.
